Visions of a Re/humanized Mathematics for LGBTQ+ Students (Synchronous)

This 8-week synchronous course will provide educators with an opportunity to explore ideas related to LGBTQ+ identity, heteronormativity in K-12 schools, queer theory, queer pedagogy (mathematical inqu[ee]ry), and centering queer joy in their mathematics instruction.

Course Outline

Session 1: Laying the Groundwork

  • What are some key elements of gender and sexuality? (homework)
  • What essential LGBTQ+ terminology should I know? (homework)
  • What do I bring to this work? (pre-work)
  • How do my intersectional identitites shape my biases about LGBTQ+ identity and how does that show up in my teaching?
  • What are safe spaces, brave spaces, and accountable spaces, and what are their pros and cons?

Session 2: Introduction to Rehumanizing and Add-Queers-And-Stirr

  • What should I know about LGBTQ+ students experiences in PK-12 schools?
  • What does LGBTQ+ identity have to do with mathematics identity and the teaching and learning of mathematics?
  • What does it mean to re/humanize mathematics?
  • What is the add-queers-and-stir approach and what are its pros and cons?

Session 3: Developing Border Consciousness

  • What is queer theory and queer pedagogy?
  • How is queer pedagogy related to re/humanizing mathematics?
  • What is border consciousness and how do I develop and use it?

Session 4: Mathematical Inqueery and Problem Posing

  • What is mathematical inqueery?
  • How does problem posing relate to mathematical inquiry?
  • How can I engage my students in problem posing while meeting the content standards?

Session 5: Cross Disciplinary Questions

  • What is a curriculum audit and why/how should I do it?
  • What are Cross Disciplinary Questions (CDQs) and how do I use them?
  • What is the difference between CDQs and border consciousness?

Session 6: Teaching Mathematics for Social Justice

  • What is teaching mathematics for social justice (TMSJ)?
  • What are some of the limitations of TMSJ and how do I address them?
  • How do I find and create TMSJ lessons?

Session 7: Creative Insubordination and Task Creation

  • What should I do if I receive pushback?
  • What is creative insubordination and how do I do it?
  • How do I start creating some of these tasks on my own?

Session 8: Task Creation and Feedback

  • How do I start creating some of these tasks on my own?
  • What feedback do my peers have on my drafted task?
  • How can I continue my learning?

Start date: September 6, 2022

Meets for 2 hours (730PM - 930PM ET) every other week for 8 sessions

Access to all course materials for 1 year

Earn PD Hours (PD Certificates issued upon request ; Check your DOE requirements in advance)

2-hour "office hour" sessions to ask Brandie questions personally on off weeks
